STEP 1: ORIENTATION TO THE LANDSCAPE

Orient yourself to the anatomy in front of you. How would this structure be positioned during life?

STEP 2: PRINCIPLES USED TO I.D. THE REQUESTED STRUCTURE

Principles:

For example, "I know the brachiocephalic artery is the first branch of the three initial branches off the aorta."

STEP 3: I.D. ANATOMICAL LANDMARKS

Look for anatomical landmarks.

In the above example, ask yourself where the aorta is. When blood is expelled from the left ventricle, it ends up in the aorta. Can you determine where the left ventricle is? Identify the great vessel leaving it. That is the aorta. Find the first branch - that is the brachiocephalic artery. Ta da!
